This Past Month...

The 2011 Science Fair was a huge success! Ms. Ali’s, Ms. Denise’s and Ms. Sunita’s young scientists worked very hard, and were excited to share their discoveries with their parents, friends, and fellow Austin scientists. Ms. Sharika’s class celebrated Earth Day and learned what they can do to help our planet. Ms. Malini’s class studied the germination of a plant. Community Helpers were one of the many topics discussed in Ms. Meena’s class. Every class had an Easter party and had a great time hunting for Easter eggs!

Upcoming May Events...

Wednesday, May 5th, Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo honors Mexico’s unlikely defeat of the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin. At Northwest Montessori we will be celebrating the culture and heritage of our neighbors with traditional Mexican song, dance, and food.

Sunday, May 8th, Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for moms, and we hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday full of good food and memories. We will be spending time in all our classes discussing and giving thanks for everything that mothers do for us.

Monday, May 30th, Memorial Day
We must also remember that it is a time to commemorate and honor the U.S. men and women who lost their lives serving their country.

Why the Montessori Method?...

Hands On

The ‘Hands On’ method is distinctive to Montessori education, and one of the primary reasons it has been so successful. It was the great philosopher and teacher Aristotle who first observed that there is nothing in the mind that is not first in the hands. ‘Hands On’ is the active employment of all senses focused on achieving a particular goal. We believe that we should not stubbornly fight against a child’s natural desire to experience the world tactilely, but rather use this desire to improve muscular development, hand-eye coordination, organization, processing, and concentration.
